Biography
Thomas was the third child and eldest son of William and Elizabeth Sargent. Born in Salisbury Massachusetts on June 11, 1643, he died on February 27, 1706. He was a farmer and resided at Bear Hill.
Before Major Robert Pike on December 20, 1677, he took the oath of allegiance and fidelity at Amesburv. Thomas held public office and was quite a prominent man in civil affairs and a lieutenant in the militia.
He married Rachel Barnes of Amesbury and Salisbury on January 2, 1667. She died in 1719. Both were buried in the "Ferry Cemetery." Their children were as follows: Thomas (died young), John (died young), Mary, Hannah, Thomas, Rachel, Jacob, William, Joseph, Judith (died young), Judith, and John.
At the age of 25 and prior to his marriage to Rachel, Thomas was involved in a scandal with Sarah (Osgood) Colby, who was 15 years old at the time. Sarah was pregnant and testified that Thomas was the father of the child. Thomas was found not guilty by the court, but Sarah's family continued to claim that the daughter, Elizabeth, was Thomas's child.
