Elkhart Lake, Wis- A town of Rhine farmer was killed almost instantly Saturday when a tractor which he was using to haul logs overturned on him. The victim was Arthur Werner, 60, of Route 2, Elkhart Lake. Werner and three other men were logging in a woods on the Frederick Buechler farm three miles northwest of here when the accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Witnesses report that one of the logs chained to the tractor caught a stump pulling the tractor over backwards and pinning Werner underneath.
Buechler had to use a loader to pull the tractor upright before Werner's body could be freed. Dr. Reed M. Simpson, Sheboygan County coroner pronounced the man dead when he arrived at the scene.
Born June 2, 1897 in Sheboygan a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Werner, Mr. Werner moved to Colby Wis. as a small boy and in the early 1920's went to work at Elkhart Lake for the Elkhart Lake Sand and Gravel Co.
He was married to Miss Katie Mueller at Elkhart Lake on Jan. 1, 1931. After their marriage couple settled on the Mueller homestead farm, two miles east of here. Mr. Werner took over operation of the farm on the death of Mr. Mueller in 1935.
Survivors are the wife; one son, Alvin, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Viola) Elmer, of the Town of Plymouth; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William (Adeline) Gerlach, Sheboygan Falls, and six brothers, Paul and Raymond, of Albert Lea, Minn., Marvin of Fairmont, Minn., Arno of Edmund, Wash., Alvin of Wells, Minn., and Reinhold of Sheboygan. One sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at Raeder Funeral Home, Elkhart Lake, with the Rev. E. H. Opperman, pastor of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church of the Town of Rhine, officiating. Burial will be in the Elkhart Lake cemetery.
