Carl Mortenson

Carl Ralph Mortensen, 93, of San Luis Obispo died February 21, 1993, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Reis Chapel in San Luis Obispo. Officers of the King David Masonic Lodge No. 209 will officiate. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at sea.

Mr. Mortenson was born June 15, 1889, in Yonkers, New York. He was raised and educated in Philadelphia, Pa. At the age of 17, he was a foreman at the Frankfort Arsenal in World War I. He worked for the United Cigar Company from 1920 to 1941, as well as the Owl Drug Company in Los Angeles from 1927 to 1932. In 1934, he married Helen Wicker.

Upon moving to San Luis Obispo in 1941, Mr. Mortenson opened the United Cigar Store, which he operated until 1956. He then opened and operated Mort’s Cigar and Liquor Store from 1956 to 1959.

Mr. Mortenson belonged to the Masons for 70 years. He was also a Shriner and an Elk. He enjoyed reading, traveling and football.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Janice and Ray Dromgold of Long Beach; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Esther Mortensen of Vero Beach, Fla; a grandson, Gary Dromgold of Los Angeles; and several nieces and nephews.
